Balthild's Baby Names

Unsure of what to name your new spawn? We at Queens Quarterly have compiled the most fitting names for everyone from little princes to squealing paupers, so check out this issue’s list of names for YOUR issues below!

Charles, Origin: Germanic (Frankish), Meaning: Free Man
Possibly one of the most kingly of names, this moniker will have your tyke growing up to be a strong and independent ruler. Charlemagne, or “Charles the Great”, rocked this name, and he is remembered for uniting most of Western Europe. Even better, his progeny were also successful rulers, so bestowing this name could mean generations of royalty. Charles the Bald, a grandson of the previous Charles and another famous figure touting this title, went on to become emperor.

Louis, Origin: German (Frankish), Meaning: Famed Warrior
Speaking of generations of power and crowns, many kings have carried this title. Louis the Pious, son of the aforementioned Charlemagne, was a kingmaker and an exemplary Christian, as is shown in the story recounting the baptism of Danish king Herold in Ermoldus Nigellus’ “Poem in Honor of Louis”. Another prominent and proper Louis’ is Louis II, also an emperor. Royalty clearly runs in this family name!

Hugh, Origin: German (Frankish), Meaning: Bright in Mind and Spirit
Despite the charming meaning, avoid naming any of your youngsters this if you want your spawn to be in the running for the crown. In four generations from Charlemagne, Hugh was given only three times to the son of a prince or king, and even then, only to the offspring of concubines or mistresses. This is NOT a name to stick your bright and bubbly baby boys with, lest you want them to be relegated to minor lordships. There’s no greatness destined in this name. Plus, it’s one letter beyond “ugh.” Your son can do better.

Retro Throwback: Chlothild, Origin: German (Frankish), Meaning: Illustrious Warrior
If you’ve just had a baby girl and you want her to marry into the crown some day, consider this vintage name. Saintly in nature and snappy in sound, Chlothild is a name that will have princes and envoys running to your daughter’s door. However, keep in mind that while this name may bring power and piety, it can also bring raucous grandchildren!

Keep your eyes peeled for more noble names and monarchical monikers in next month's issue!
